A Report

The inception of the Department of languages dates back to 1969 along with the establishment of our Institution. This year the Department enters into its 50th year of disseminating linguistic expertise. This semantic Branch welcomed its freshers for the academic year 2018-19 through an Orientation Program. The Program was conducted for I semester language students of Hindi, Kannada, Sanskrit, Tamil and French from BA / BSc / BCom / BCom (H) and BBA. The Orientation was held on Wednesday, 13 June 2018 between 10 and 11am and on Thursday, 14 June 2018 between 9 and 10am for the I BA/BSc and I BCom / BBA respectively. The new entrants were assembled in the KE Auditorim, Block IV awaiting the array of information. 
The Mistresses of Ceremony Dr.Nagalakshmi and Ms.Kavitha welcomed the gathering and briefed the students about the history of the Department on Day 1 and Day 2 respectively. They also invited the Head of the Department Dr.Mallika Krishnaswami to address the new arrivals. The Head welcomed the new energy to be part of the Christ Language Family and introduced all the Faculty members to them. 


She explained to the students about the various events and competitions that would be organized throughout the year under the Language Forum, Bhasha Parishat, which is in existence since 2013. She made known the available opportunities for the students. The Head pinpointed the areas of literary and cultural growth given to the students through many events such as Multi-Lingual Poets’ Meet, Yakshagana, Bhasha Surabhi etc. Dr. Mallika also referred to the Language Magazines released by the department, where the students are encouraged to publish their literary works in Hindi, Kannada, Sanskrit, Tamil and French. 
The students were informed about the inclusion of Blended Learning through Wikipedia in Indian Languages in their curriculum, which they would take up for their Continuous Internal Assessments throughout the 4 semesters of language learning. The students were then informed about the different open elective courses that fall under the department that they could opt for over the course of their academic journey in this institution. They are Spoken Kannada, Wikipedia Education Programme, Vedic Mathematics, French (DELF A1 & A2), German (DELF A1 & A2), Korean, Spanish, Chinese, Russian and Japanese.
The Head asked the students to contact the Department of Languages for further clarifications. She concluded by wishing the students success in their future endeavours. Following this the faculty clarified the queries of the students. 
At the end of the informative hour, Dr. Sebastian and Dr.Shivaprasad delivered the Vote of Thanks as coordinators of the programmes on their respective days.
In conclusion, the Orientation Program set the tone for the students to showcase their literary, artistic & dramatic talents and to help, express & develop themselves in a language background.
